Ping Pong Basics: A Beginner's Guide

The Fundamentals of Table Tennis

Ping pong, or table tennis, is a fast-paced, exciting sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. Whether you're playing in a park on one of our mapped tables or in a professional club, understanding the basics is key to having fun and improving your game.

1. The Equipment

To get started, you only need three things: a paddle (racket), a ball, and a table. Most public tables are made of concrete or high-pressure laminate, which are durable for outdoor use. For beginners, a standard "all-around" paddle with a good balance of speed and control is recommended.

2. Basic Rules

While the goal is simple—hit the ball over the net onto the opponent's side—there are specific rules for singles and doubles play that you should know before starting a match.

  • Serving: The ball must rest on an open palm. It must be tossed at least 16cm up and hit so it touches your side once and then the opponent's side.
  • Scoring: Games are usually played to 11 points. You must win by at least 2 points.
  • Alternating Service: Players alternate serving every two points.

3. The Grip

There are two main ways to hold the paddle: the "Shakehand" grip (like you're shaking hands with the paddle) and the "Penhold" grip (holding it like a pen). Most European players use the Shakehand grip as it offers great versatility for both forehand and backhand shots.

Conclusion

The best way to learn is to practice. Grab a friend, find the nearest table on our map, and start playing today!
